Make the first Sunday your family funday!!   Explore the Museum and participate in the hands-on activities, live demonstrations, interactives and more!  Family Science Sunday is included in the admission and free for members!  Science fun for everyone!

12, 19, 26  Read, Touch, and Discover
Thursdays at 10:30 am
Learn about all about Insects Galore and More!  This program introduces your young child to a different book each week, as well as exploring natural history.  An adult must accompany each child and older siblings are welcome.

This year will be buggier than ever! Enjoy programs on native bees, sericulture, insect sounds, and the ever-popular Mothman. Displays and demonstrations both days will include aquatic insects, butterflies, forest entomology, and a live observation beehive - plus - Cockroach Races, Beetle Tractor Pulls, Cricket Spitting, and much more! This year, a food vendor will be available, so have lunch here and make a day of it.

Saturday Programs: 11 & 12:30 Dr. Stephen Rannels, Songs of Crickets & Katydids. Learn how and why our local crickets and katydids produce sound.  Steve will use recordings of many different species, along with their photographs, so we can become familiar with the sounds of the summer’s night. 2 & 3:30 Sam Droege, Native Bees. Often overlooked and underappreciated, bumble bees, harvest bees, leafcutter bees, and many others help to pollinate our gardens and crops.

Sunday Programs: 1 & 2:00 John “The Mothman” Laskowski. Always popular, with an extensive collection of mounted and live moths, he will take you where no “Mothman” has gone before! 3:30 Stephanie Daugherty, Sericulture History. There’s intrigue in the ancient art of raising silkworms and spinning silk. Stephanie will demonstrate the entire labor intensive and complex process of preparing the cocoons and spinning the yarn.

Curious Critters
Ages:  5 – 6   Time:  9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.   Date:  July 16 – July 20   Cost:  $125 for Members: $150 others

If you love animals, you'll be right at home at this camp.  Campers will be introduced to the stories of well known author  Janell Cannon and learn to share her appreciation for amazing creatures and the role they play in the ecosystem.  By the end of the week  you will  understand the most misunderstood creatures.  Gain a special appreciation for these curious critters through the use of crafts, games and visual aids. 

 Science Sampler
Ages:  7 – 9  & 10 -12   Time:  9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Date:  July 23 – July 27  Cost:  $195 for Members: $225 others

Participate in experiments and make scientific observations as you experience hair-raising fun during this week of “Mad Science”.  Each day campers will explore a different science topic, such as rocketry, chemistry, and biology.  Programs are presented by Minority Aviation Education Association of West Virginia.

 Tricky Tricks & Puzzling Perplexities
Ages:  10 – 12   Time:  9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Date:  July 30 – August 3  Cost:  $195 for Members: $225 others

Create and play a variety of games, tricks, puzzles and pranks.  Use your powers of observation, logic, and even some good old-fashioned manners to succeed at these fun activities.  You will be able to amaze your friends and family with your new talent and knowledge!

20   Grands Are GRAND!
Friday, 4:00 - 4:45 pm
“Grands are GRAND!” will explore Maize.  The “Grands are GRAND!” workshops are interactive for young visitors ages 3-5 and their favorite young-at-heart grandparents, and combine literacy, science, and a take-home craft. Registration is required for all classes. Please call 291-4371 to register or for more information.
Members: $5/grandchild (materials fee), free for grandparent
Non-members: $5/grandchild (materials fee) plus Museum admission, Museum admission charged for grandparent
