
North Museum Science & Engineering Fair
On Wednesday, March 27th, 379 middle and senior high school students from 21 schools throughout Lancaster County participated in the 60th annual Science & Engineering Fair held at the Franklin & Marshall Alumni Sports & Fitness Center in Lancaster, Pa.
Since its inception in 1953, the Fair has grown from 39 participants to more than 1,000 students competing on the school level for a chance to advance to the county-wide competition.

Champions of Science Dinner
The Grand Champion and Senior Champion will be honored during the North Museum’s 5th Annual Champions of Science Dinner with guest speaker, Dr. Denise Su, Curator and Head of the Department of Paleobatany and Paleoecology at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
Students who are champions or who have won a first place award in their category are invited to display their projects. Students are invited to arrive at 4pm to set up their display and enjoy a private, student-only reception with a guest speaker 4:30pm- 5pm.
The Champions of Science Dinner will be held May 1 at 5pm to 8:30pm at the Lancaster Country Club. RSVP required. Please contact Kristi Baker at kbaker@northmuseum.org.
Board of Directors Prize

Congratulations to Patricia Wee of Ephrata High School! Mrs. Wee was awarded for her commitment to inspiring students in science education.

Congratulations to the winners of our 2012 fair!

The 2012 Grand Champion is Jesse Martin, a senior at Elizabethtown High School. Martin’s project, “High-power, Frictionless Gear Reduction Using Magnetic Repulsion,” earned him a spot to travel to the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, in May.
Receiving the Senior Champion award was Zach Custer, a junior at Conetoga Valley High School. Zach will also compete at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair with his project entitled, “Converting Municipal Paper Waste into Ethanol though Acid and Enzymatic Hydrolysis.” Divya Sirdeshpande, a sophomore at Hempfield High School, won the Senior Reserve Champion prize for her project, “New Sustainable Porous Material from Waste and Renewables.”
The Junior Champion was Damon Deck, with his project, “Hydroelectricity: An Alternative.” Damon is an 7th grader at Landisville Middle School. Mary Elizabeth Dagny Wentling’s project, “A Comparison of Nitrate, Phosphate, Temperature and Turbidity Levels in the Conestoga River (Urban Versus Rural) and the Impact on Dissolved Oxygen Levels,” won her the Junior Reserve Champion prize. She is an 8th grader at Landisville Middle School.
LATEST UPDATES! posted May 3 2012- Sarah Thompson has won the PA State Junior Stockholm Water Prize and will be advancing to the national level competition in June in Boston, MA.
Gaurav Sirdeshpande has won the PA State BioGeneius Challenge and will be advancing to the national level competion ( also in Boston, MA) later this summer.
Posted May 7 2012: Divya Sirdeshpande won a silver medal and special award at ISWEEEP in Houston, TX.
At the International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh PA:
Zach Custer has a radio interview at ISEF and wins a copy of Mathematica 8.0 from Wolfram Research
Jesse Martin also wins a copy of Mathematica, a 2nd place auxiliary award from Ansaldo STS ( $3000) and a 3rd award in his category of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering ( $1000)
