Scout Programs

We apologize for the inconvenience, but due to current renovations we are unable to offer any scout programs for this spring.  We will continue to offer our Belt Loop Day and Webelos Scientist Activity Badge in the Fall 2015.

If you are unfamiliar with the scout programs below is what we have offered the past few years.

Cub Scout Belt Loop Day

Calling all Cub Scouts! Don’t miss the opportunity to earn three Belt Loops in one day. Stations will be set up throughout the Museum with fun, hands-on activities designed to meet the requirements. Scouts must be accompanied by an adult.

Spring Featured Belt Loops:   Astronomy, Geology and Science
Fall Featured Belt Loops: Geography, Weather, and Wildlife Conservation

Requirements that are covered...
Astronomy Belt Loop
1. Demonstrate how to focus a simple telescope or binoculars.
2. Draw a diagram of our solar system - identify the planets and other objects.
3. Explain the following terms: planet, star, solar system, galaxy, the Milky Way, black hole, red giant, white dwarf, comet, meteor, moon, asteroid, star map, and universe.

Geology Belt Loop
1. Explain to your den or an adult family member what geology means.
2. Collect samples of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Explain how each was formed.
3. Collect samples of three minerals. Explain to your family or den what a mineral is and show and tell about the minerals you collected.

Science Belt Loop
1. Explain the scientific method to your adult partner.
2. Use the scientific method in a simple science project. Explain the results to an adult.
3. Visit a museum, a laboratory, an observatory, a zoo, an aquarium, or other facility that employs scientists. Talk to a scientist about his or her work.  (We are planning on featuring at least one of the winners from the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair, which takes place at the end of March)

Webelos Scientist Activity Badge Workshops

Bring out the inner scientist in your scout. Discover the Bernoulli Principle, Pascal’s Law, the effects of pressure, among many other things related to being a scientist. All requirements needed to earn the Scientist badge will be covered during the workshop with fun and engaging activities. Space is limited.

We are still in the process of determining dates for this year's Webelos Workshops and may be pushed back into 2015.  We are also working on offering an additional Webelos workshop different from the Scientist badge.

Requirements that are covered...
1. Read Bernoulli's Principle.  Show how it works.
2. Read Pascal's Law.  Tell about some inventions that use Pascal's Law.
3. Read Newton's first law of motion.  Show in three different ways how inertia works.
4. While you are a Webelos Scout, earn the Cub Scout Academics belt loop for Science
5. Show the effects of atmospheric pressure.
6. Show the effects of air pressure.
7. Show the effects of water pressure.
9. Explain what causes fog.  Show how this works.
11. Explain how you use your center of gravity to keep your balance.  Show three different balancing tricks.
12. Show in three different ways how your eyes work together, and show what is meant by an optical illusion.
