Planet Hunter

Recommended forages 8-11 (Grades 3 - 6) 

Length: Approx. 30 minutes 

Join the Planet Hunter as he searches for planets beyond our solar system!!  This live theatrical performance incorporates audience participation as your group will identify the planets in our solar system and help demonstrate the scaled distance between the sun and the earth.  You'll also learn about how the challenges in looking for other planets as well as the current Kepler mission, which is searching for the first earth-like planet beyond our solar system, and how astronomers go about looking for those extrasolar planets.

The following standards have been met:

3.3.4 B1 - Identify planets in our solar system and their basic characteristics. Describe the Earth's place in the solar system.

3.3.10 B2 - Explain how scientists obtain information about the universe by using technology. 

3.3.12 B2 - Apply mathematical models and computer simulations to study evidence collected relating to the extent and composition of the universe.

3.3.6 B1 - Compare and contrast the size, composition, and surface features of the planets that comprise the solar system as well as the objects orbiting them.
