Birds

The North Museum’s ornithology collection is one of the largest in Pennsylvania. The entire collection includes 1,609 mounted birds, 769 study skins, and 1,835 egg clutches. Most species native to this region are found in the collection, as well as many worldwide species that date back to the early part of the 19^th century. 

964 mounted bird specimens are on exhibit in the North Museum’s Cabinet Museum. The collection also houses specimens of extinct birds – the Carolina Parakeet, Heath Hen, Passenger Pigeon and Ivory Billed Woodpecker. Rare and endangered species such as the Whooping Crane and Andean Condor are also on display. A complete skeleton of the extinct Moa from New Zealand, donated to the Museum in 1903 by J.M. Mays of Philadelphia, can be found on display in the Dinosaur Hall.
